Dr M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute University began its journey in the year 1985 with the constitution of the Kannammal Educational Trust which started the Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College. Three years later, in 1988, the Dr MGR Engineering College was founded and the Thai Moogambigai Dental College came into being in 1991. Deemed university status was bestowed upon both these institutes in 2003 by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The courses offered by the university can be broadly divided into four categories – engineering & technology, medical & dental sciences, humanities & science, and architecture.
The faculty of engineering & technology offers various degree and diploma programmes in all the major areas of engineering. The faculty of medical & dental sciences offers programmes in dental surgery, nursing and physiotherapy. Programmes in hotel management & catering technology come under the faculty of humanities & science.
Admissions are based on merit. An entrance test is held by the university. Part-time bachelors and masters courses are also offered to working executives.
The faculty strength of the university stands at 750 with 105 doctoral degree holders. The teacher-student ratio of 1:14 ensures that each student receives individual attention.
The university’s campus spreads over an area of 300 acres. Its A.C.S. Convention Centre is one of the largest in the city of Chennai. It houses a well-stocked library with over 100,000 books and thousands of national and international journals. For easy accessibility, there is a central library, departmental libraries and a digital library.
The university organises various cultural programmes. It celebrates its annual cultural event called Cenozoic. The university has a robust alumni association with 10,526 registered members. They are asked to share their valuable insights about the professional world with students.
